In the time when the turtle’s back was soft,” Nyame the Sky God needed Osebo the Leopard’s drum for a great festival. “Bring it to me!” he calls to the animals. Tembo the mighty Elephant, and Kinyanga the swift Ostrich are unsuccessful. Then, Akykiegie the little Turtle, tricks the fierce leopard, and brings Nyame Osebo’s drum.. The turtle’s reward is a beautiful hard shell. The powerful chanting and drumming of the companion audio of this Ashanti tale has earned it the distinction of an ALA Notable Children's Recording.

"Tells the traditional Swahili tale of how the turtle tricked the fierce leopard into giving a large an powerful drum to the sky god. The Swahili words are explained at the beginning of the story, and the animals' emotions are excellently conveyed in the telling. African chants and background music give the tale a sense of place and power." - Booklist (American Library Assn.)

"This African folktale read-along comes alive with the resonant voice of the Sky God and the background sounds of the jungle drums and chants. After the elephant and ostrich fail to defeat the leopard, the persistent turtle outwits his adversary in this satisfying, rewarding and exciting recording. The flip side encourages children to empathize with several African animals and to imitate the voices and characters in the story."- School Library Journal

"Upon leaving the theater, I was given the How the Turtle Got Its Shell tape and book package. My students started listening to it and it was an immediate success. Students who previously could not read and had little interest in reading were pleading to go to the listening center to hear and read this particular story... I am firmly convinced that the student's consistent use of the listening center (and in particular, Shadow Box Theatre's book and tapes) have significantly contributed to raised reading scores and an overall love of reading." - Beverly Watrous, P.S. 69 Bronx
